First Micro Intelligent Power Module (IPM) in China

Nowadays, residential electricity consumption is rising fast and it occupies about 23% of the total consumption. Of these, 80% of the residential electricity consumption is contributed by the air-conditioner, refrigerators and washing machine. The motor driving system with frequency conversion technology would save about 44% of the power consumption and the intelligent power module (IPM) is the most important IC in that motor driving system, which have attracted lots of attention in recent years.

Porf. Sun Weifeng’s team, cooperating with Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology Co.,Ltd., has overcome the heat dissipation technology, HV isolation technology and HV noise immunity technology, et.al. They designed the first Micro IPM of China by using mini 12x12x0.9mm PQFN package. The breakdown voltage of the module is higher than 570V and its current capability is larger than 2A. Therefore, this Micro IPM can be used in Medium-low power variable frequency motor driving system, such as the fan of air-conditioner, drainage motor in washing machine and variable frequency fan. Comparing with the conventional IPM, the chip size and thickness of the Micro IPM is decreased by about 60% and 80% respectively, which is better for the miniaturization of the driving system.

In addition, the Micro IPM has lots of features,

1. The heat can be dissipated easily by the copper in PCB when using Micro IPM.

2. The Micro IPM has integrated the bootstrap circuit, no need of external high voltage bootstrap diode.

3. The Micro IPM has used a novel cap-loading high voltage level shifter circuit. The dVs/dt immunity and VS bias capability is improved to 85V/ns and -12V respectively, which has reached the leading level in the world.
